Our latest European painting adventure was to the Andalucia region of Spain in May, 2009. Once again, we traveled with our teacher and friends Janice Beck and her husband, Jerry Mitchell. This time we shared a house. That was such fun and we tried not to bug Janice to help us paint on non-painting days. Here is one of Kay's paintings and there will be many more on the Andalucia page.

Cala Lilies of Zagrilla Kay Fuller
This painting was inspired by the scene below. Kay is studying the calas and planning her painting.
The white building is a spring-fed wash house where the ladies still do their laundry by hand.

Going back to the beginning of our painting journey, we never tried our hands at painting until we took an Untours trip to Provence in 2005. Janice Beck was our teacher for a five day intensive in small villages near L'Isle Sur La Sorgue. Later that year we found a wonderful local teacher at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, Gina Clapp, who patiently nurtured our desire to master watercolor painting. We returned to Provence in 2006 for more lessons with Janice in beautiful small towns including, Venasque, Roussillon, and St. Didier. We attended Janice Beck workshops in Umbria, Italy in 2007 and Nafplio, Greece in 2008.
Kay has also studied with David Daniels at the Smithsonean, Michelle Hoben at CHAW, and Rachael Collins, Steve Fleming and Jackie Saunders at the Torpedo Factory. She won her first Honorable Mention Award at the Capitol Hills Arts League show, Night and Day, on January 12, 2008.
Before you look at our pictures, we want you to know that a percentage of our sales goes towards Christian Missions through St. Matthews UMC and UMCOR. Bob is active with The Appalachian Service Project, building homes in Juarez, Mexico, disaster response and emergency preparedness.

Kay Painting in Bevagna, June 2007. This is a very typical setting for our art classes. I am the one in white, Donna Peters is behind me and Shirley Furches getting a little help from Jerry. Janice's husband, Jerry Mitchell, helps us a lot with drawing, composition, and perspective. He is an excellent potter when he is not making all the women jealous. BTW, this is an active street, and cars and trucks go whizzing by, clearing us by about two feet

This is the charming owner of the house in Kay's Shadows of Montefalco.
Even though he spoke no English, he was able to communicate with one of our fellow artists in French. He brought us a giant umbrella for shade, and opened his garden so we could store our gear at lunch time and have free access to water. Hospitality in Italy is abundaza
